Back To The Future with Jonny Smith’s All Electric Flux Capacitor

Flux Capacitor?

If you remember that special movie from 1985 called Back To The Future, connecting with that contraption will be a breeze.

So, The flux capacitor was the core component of Dr. Emmett Brown’s time traveling DeLorean time machine and the following Jules Verne Train. Doc Brown stated that the flux capacitor “is what makes time travel possible.”

Quick Watch: Flux Capacitor’s Record Breaking Dragstrip Run

The Flux Capacitor is one of the quickest and cutest electric vehicles on the road today. Jonny Smith, an automotive journalist from the UK [yes, presenter on the TV show Fifth Gear], took an old, flood ravaged Enfield 8000 EEC [electric city car] and gave it a little lot more electric muscle.

The pre-historic 12v battery pack and 8HP (6kW) electric motor combo was replaced by a new powertrain with the following specs;

Motor: Twin series-mounted 9-inch DC Current Racing motors with Helwig carbon split brushes, silicone insulation rated for 2000 amps at 170v with a max rpm of 5500rpm.

Gearbox: Nope. Direct drive.

Batteries: 188 Lithium-ion Kokam military grade ‘pouch’ cells originally used as starter and mini-gun batteries for the Bell SuperCobra helicopter. Built into 4 packs (three under bonnet, one in rear boot area) by Hyperdrive Innovations using Hyperdrive’s own BMS (Battery Management System).

Performance: Torque – 1200lb ft+ HorsePower – 800+HP.

How Quick? 0-60 in sub 3 seconds. Quarter-mile in 10 seconds…or less!

Range? About 50 miles

Street Legal? Yes.

With all that transformation, on July 16, 2016, Smith and the Flux Capacitor entered the record books as the world’s fastest street-legal EV, running the quarter-mile in 9.87 seconds!

Trivia: To ensure that he would be around to see the 1/4 mile record smashing result first hand, Smith had the time travel circuit turned off for that run so that he and the car didn’t disappear into another era.
